Polyurethane binding materials are available in a multitude of colours and textures and can give some really striking effects. Traditionally PU was used as a faux leather to simulate the natural quality of leather but its uses have expanded well beyond that now, into a mind boggling array of chic colours, textures and finishes. PU is super smooth to touch and well suited to the luxury journal, packaging and book markets as a classy yet durable covering material.
Some PUs are thermo-reactive meaning that they change colour to a darker tone when embossed using hot stamping. This is a really effective and popular way to add design motifs and highlight text on a book cover. You can add screen printing or foiling too – the sky’s the limit!
