What will I learn?

  • Setting-up the Document Specifying the TPS & margins, using facing pages, bleed and slug. Separating the prelim and body pages into sections.

  • Styling Create a basic set of styles for headings and body text. Understanding the importance of Style Sheets for both print and ebook, and how to create and apply both Character & Paragraph styles

  • Importing the Manuscript Preserving essential formatting such as italicisation etc., removing unwanted formatting such as extra returns, spaces & tabs. The process of applying text styles to the manuscript.

  • Building the book-block The options for flowing text and building the initial book-block.

  • Master Pages: Using Master pages for different page treatments such as Chapter Openers. Setting-up Running Headers and automatic page numbering. Using Text Variables to automate Running Heads.

  • Prelims Isolating the Frontmatter from the main body of the text to populate the prelim pages (title, copyright, Foreword etc.) Creating an automatic Table of Contents.

  • Images – Importing logos and placing in-line images. Placing stand-alone images anchored to the text string and applying a text wrap.

  • Widows, orphans, tracking and hyphenation – Applying hyphenation settings. The various methods for dealing with widows and orphans. How the Paragraph Composer can affect the flow of text and the editing and correction process.

  • Output Outputting to PDF for proofreading.

What skills are needed for this course?

Suitable for authors, editors, production or anyone needing to learn how to typeset in InDesign. No previous typesetting experience necessary.

Mark Bracey – Experienced Book Publishing Designer

Mark has worked in book publishing as a designer and trainer for nearly twenty five years. After studying graphic design he worked for various design studios before taking on a training role at Dorling Kindersley.

While at DK he advised on best practices for book creation and ran a team of in-house DTP staff. Following DK’s merger with Penguin, Mark worked as a key member of the management team responsible for the group’s migration to InDesign.

Mark is currently working as a freelance book designer and typesetter and provides self-publishing services to individual authors and institutions through his own imprint
