  • Pen Tool and Paths Fundamentals

    • The fundamentals of bezier curves: creating and modifying paths as you draw
    • Creating layer templates for tracing
    • Making selections: The Selection Tool vs. the Direct Selection Tool
    • Path construction techniques – Making use of the box tools, combining shapes, the Pathfinder Tool, connecting anchor points
    • Using the transform, rotation tools & ‘Transform Again’ with paths & points to create perfectly symmetrical shapes
    • Using the Average & Join commands
  • Text

    • ‘Flowing’ text boxes vs. point & click text
    • Creating and modifying outlined type
    • Type on a curve and around a circle
    • Tracing custom typefaces and logos
  • Artwork Construction Techniques

    • Using Layers to de-construct the artwork. Duplicating and modifying layers
    • Using Masks within layers
    • Creating Compound Paths. Interlinking objects
    • Building complex artworks
  • Enhancing artwork

    • Using gradients, the Gradient Mesh Tool and the Blend Tool.
    • Automatic tracing (and it’s drawbacks!) using automatic Image tracing and Live Paint.
  • Colour settings

    • Understand the appropriate colour settings to use for print.

What skills do I need to do this course?

Aimed at book designers who are currently using the application at a very basic level and have had no previous Illustrator training. This course is designed to be generic and the topics covered will apply to all recent versions of Illustrator.

Mark Bracey – Experienced Book Publishing Designer

Mark has worked in book publishing as a designer and trainer for nearly twenty five years. After studying graphic design he worked for various design studios before taking on a training role at Dorling Kindersley.

While at DK he advised on best practices for book creation and ran a team of in-house DTP staff. Following DK’s merger with Penguin, Mark worked as a key member of the management team responsible for the group’s migration to InDesign.

Mark is currently working as a freelance book designer and typesetter and provides self-publishing services to individual authors and institutions through his own imprint
